Scott Lister was founded in November 2009 and was born out of the close working relationship between two of the businesses Directors, Mark Scott and Howard Lister. This is the second business venture between the two, the first being "BlueField" a risk management consultancy which they established in June 2004. BlueField was sold to Lloyd's Register in November 2005 and both Mark and Howard assumed senior management roles within Lloyd's until January 2009 and July 2009 respectively.

The genesis of Scott Lister is technology and process advisory services in the safety, risk and assurance areas, however the company has sought to build upon the "people" side of business improvement through drawing upon direct experience gained with other companies. Mark Scott and Howard Lister both serve on the Board of Ability People, the recruitment and HR consulting organisation.
